When you are choosing between a charcoal or gas barbecue grill you will need to consider many things including the ease of lighting, your budget and a few other points. Whichever type you pick you will be sure to get just the same tasty barbecued food! We’ve written this guide so that you can make a wise decision.

Charcoal Barbecue Grills

The simplest and least expensive are charcoal grills as they are just a container for the charcoal, with a grilling rack and usually a means to control air flow. They may be built from cast iron or stainless steel. The simplest to take care of are the stainless steel barbecues that have a baked on enamel coating as this prevents rusting. Make sure that the wheels are heavy duty so that they will not become cracked if you leave the barbecue out in extreme weather conditions. It is best that the grate is manufactured out of stainless steel or nickel plate so that it won’t rust and it will clean up easily. In addition check that the the barbecue has wooden handles as as they won’t get as hot as metal ones. Another good idea is to have a hinged grate as this will make it easier to add more charcoal. Several models have an attached work surface however, make sure that it has an easy to clean surface and it looks durable.

Charcoal Grill Advantages and Disadvantages

Charcoal grills are usually less expensive than propane or natural gas grills and many people prefer their familiar ambiance. They aren’t so straightforward to light as natural gas or propane grills but many people think this adds to the fun of the occasion! They need regular cleaning and they can also cost more to operate. Then again if you will only use it now and then this won’t really make much difference.

Gas Barbecue Grills

Gas barbecues may operate with either propane or natural gas. Enamel on stainless steel is the best material as it can be left outside and will not rust. Check that the legs are sturdy and preferably welded to ensure they last. It’s always a good idea to buy a grill that has two or more burners which are spaced evenly apart. Two different types of systems are used, angled steel bars or lava rocks. We like better angled cooking bars as the juices from the food are vapourised and increases the flavor of the food. A system using lava rocks may cause the juices to collect in the barbecue bottom which may result in a flare up.

Some Advantages & Disadvantages of Gas Barbecues

Propane or natural gas barbecues are much more expensive than charcoal grills however lots of people prefer their convenience. They are very easy to light and temperature control is easy. They are less expensive to run than charcoal barbecue grills so if you intend to use your barbecue a lot they may work out cheaper. They are much cleaner and there are no ashes to get rid of!
